Paolo Angelillo
Born in 1978, Paolo Angelillo began his artistic journey through music, initially focusing on drums and later on singing. These experiences helped him develop a profound expressive and performative sensibility, which gradually intertwined with his interest in painting and drawing. As a self-taught artist, he explored the principles of light, composition, and portraiture—elements that would become fundamental to his photographic research.
Since 2015, he has pursued photography in an increasingly structured way, participating in group exhibitions and collaborating with photography collectives that have contributed to his technical and conceptual development. His research focuses primarily on artistic portraiture and the theatrical construction of images, areas he has further explored through courses and seminars with leading professionals in contemporary photography.
His visual language is distinguished by the expressive use of light, the theatricality of his compositions, and the interplay between painting and photography. A decisive moment in his artistic journey came with his discovery of Caravaggio’s work, which inspired “Caravaggio RELOADED,” a project that reinterprets the atmospheres, dramatic contrasts of light, and emotional tensions of the Lombard master from a contemporary perspective, translating his visual power into a new photographic dimension.
His exhibition history includes solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad, with participation in major international events such as the World Art Fair in Dubai and the Affordable Art Fair in New York. Between 2024 and 2025, he also exhibited at various venues across Italy and took part in the Arte Padova and Bergamo Arte Fiera art fairs.
Since 2022, he has been developing “ART FOR FILM,” a project dedicated to iconic films shot in Turin. Presented through four exhibition editions, the project has been hosted by prominent museums and cultural venues, including the National Museum of Cinema in Turin. In 2025, he also created a site-specific work for the festival La magia della luce (The Magic of Light), dedicated to cinema on film. The large-scale photograph, measuring approximately six metres by two and a half metres, explores what happens behind the movie cameras, bringing to light the world that unfolds beyond the frame.
In 2026, he returns to New York for the group exhibition “Edge of Now,” continuing an artistic journey in constant evolution. He is currently working on his third project, “L’essenza invisibile” (The Invisible Essence), dedicated to human emotions and the possibility of revealing their deepest nuances through the language of photography.
